This festival is a not-for-profit and full on community endeavor. From featuring local artists, and visiting artists Marlene Creates and Sheilah Wilson (also a native of Pictou County), talking events and music, the W(here) Festival has the Pictou County community at its core as many of the projects directly engage residents.
It is my hope that by working closely with a community volunteers and neighborhood businesses that we may establish a sustainable model for a local cultural festival, which may continue in future years. Additionally, I have met with local artists and cultural enthusiasts in the region, who have revealed a strong desire to present Pictou’s vibrant cultural practices in a new and exciting way. Partnership, on all levels, is key to any new endeavor especially one that strives to represent those who live and work here.
On the business side of things, the arts can be a strong economic draw. I also believe that this project speaks to rural empowerment through the arts by focusing on positive discourse regarding place, exploring new terrain, new histories, and new possibilities through artistic thinking. All of the events for the festival will be free and family friendly.
